Soul Fragments

Peter Tomasek is a graphic designer by profession, but originally he got into the world of art through graffiti – and these aspects of his personality are reflected in various ways within his artworks. In his solo exhibition titled Soul Fragments, we gained insight into the various fragments of his psyche, all of which symbolize certain stages of his state of mind as an attempt to resolve either socially critical or introspective tensions.

From the very beginning, Tomasek's intense desire for spiritual and existential freedom encouraged him to break away from the ordinary. Whether it is about breaking out of the framework provided by his socio-cultural environment, or by deviating from the usual painting practice, stepping out of the canvases’ border. Among other things, being influenced by socially significant events such as the 2019 Hong Kong protests, the creator decided to go beyond the limits of the two-dimensional image; during the period of the protests, he visited the autonomous city-state, where he witnessed the manifestation of a strong, collective 'longing for freedom'.

In the 1950s, in the US state of California, the 'Hard-edge' school of painting emerged from geometric abstraction: and Tomasek's symmetrical, almost vector-graphic compositions of straight lines and polylines achieve their harmony in a dynamic, yet balanced system via the totality of the contrast of colours. Much like the works of artists of the Hard-edge movement, like Frank Stella, who has made a great influence on our artist presented. The use of vivid colours fills his works with life, while the geometric shapes composed proportionately from sharply emphasized lines lend energy and momentum to the paintings and reliefs.
